The cheap chair is the expensive one.

A chair at AED 400 that dies in two years costs more per year than one at AED 1,490 that lasts twelve. That is the whole argument, and it is easy to check with a calculator rather than a sales pitch. Here it is with our own numbers, including the part where spending more stops paying you back.

1. The arithmetic

Divide the price by the years the chair survives. That is the only number that matters once you sit down to compare.

ChairPriceLastsPer year
Mall specialAED 4002 yearsAED 200
Our cheapestAED 59012 years on the frame AED 49
Our medianAED 1,49012 years on the frame AED 124
Our most expensiveAED 6,69012 years on the frame AED 558

The median chair works out at about AED 0.34 a day — less than parking for an hour. The cheap chair is more expensive per year than anything in our range, and it is uncomfortable for the whole two years as a bonus.

Two honest caveats. Twelve years is our warranty on the frame, not a promise that the upholstery looks new in year eleven. And a chair only reaches those numbers if it fits you — the fastest way to waste money is to buy the right chair in the wrong size.

2. Where the line actually is

Spending more does not improve things evenly. There is a step, and it is not at the top of the price list.

Below AED 1,290 you are buying a sound frame, a cylinder and a simple mechanism. The chair holds one position well. For a few hours a day that is genuinely enough, and 81 is the number of our models that go beyond it.

At AED 1,290 the synchro mechanism appears — the back and seat move together, so you shift position all day without leaving the desk. This is the step that changes how a working day feels.

Above roughly AED 2,500 you are buying adjustment range, materials and finish: 3D lumbar, 4D armrests, genuine leather, aluminium instead of polyamide. All real, all pleasant, none of them as decisive as the mechanism was.

Where we are honest about ourselves

By this logic, most people should buy from the middle of our range rather than the top. We would rather say that than sell you the expensive one and have you conclude in a year that chairs are a racket.

3. What makes a chair die early

Chairs rarely fail all at once. They fail in one part, and the owner decides it is not worth fixing.

  • The gas cylinder sinks. The most common failure and the cheapest to repair — often the reason a two-year-old chair goes to the tip when it needed a part worth a fraction of a new chair.
  • The mechanism loosens. On a cheap chair this is terminal, because the part is not sold separately and nobody stocks it.
  • The foam collapses. Faster in this climate than in Europe, which is a subject of its own in why chairs die faster in Dubai.
  • The upholstery flakes. Coated «leather» in heat and humidity. Cosmetic, but it is what makes people replace a working chair.

This is why the warranty question is not «how many years» but «who fits the part, and where does it come from». Ours is fitted by us in the UAE: the warranty in full.

4. When cheap is the right answer

Not everything needs a twelve-year chair, and pretending otherwise would be the same sales pitch in the other direction.

  • A guest desk or a spare room used a few hours a week.
  • A chair for a child who will outgrow it.
  • A short lease. If you are in the country for a year, the whole calculation changes and a cheap chair may be the rational buy.
  • A second chair for a corner you rarely work in.

For the chair you actually work in, the arithmetic at the top of this page holds.

Questions

Is a twelve-year warranty realistic?

On the steel frame, yes — it either lasts or fails early. The mechanism and moving parts are free to replace for five years and half price after that. It is not a claim that foam and fabric look new after a decade; no honest warranty covers wear.

What is the cheapest chair worth buying for full-time work?

In our range, the point where a synchro mechanism appears: AED 1,290. Below that we would rather you knew what you are giving up.

Do you have anything under a thousand dirhams?

Yes, 55 models. They are honest chairs for lighter use: see them here.

Is buying used a better deal?

Sometimes, and sometimes it is someone else's worn cylinder. The questions to ask are how old the mechanism is and what happens when a part fails.

The short version

Divide by years, not by feelings. A cheap chair that lasts two years costs more per year than our median chair at AED 124. The step that matters is the mechanism, at AED 1,290; above that you buy comfort and finish rather than durability. And for a spare desk, cheap is genuinely the right answer.
